I can’t quite follow your argument here Anthony, do you mean
that a religion which looses its mysticism leads to Atheism sec,
or that a religion without mysticism is no religion at all, or … ?
And how then do you appreciate the role of natural theology vis
a vis mysticism in this context ?
An omission of Higgin’s article is that the Dutch philosopher and
atheist Herman Philipse is not mentioned. Already in 1995 he wrote
his notorious _Atheistisch Manifest_ [Atheist Manifesto] and has
over the years polemized, published and lectured a lot on the issue.
Some of his writings can be found on the net, f.i. _The Irrationality
of Religion. A Plea for Atheism (2001)_ and _The Incompatibility
of Science and religion. An Argument for Atheism (2001)_, both
are nicely argued pieces that provide imo a stronger case for Atheism
than Onfray’s masquerade.
