- Nurse, what’s the latest on Mr Evans’ condition?
- I wheeled him into the sun for half an hour, as you told me to do. But
the light seems to have affected his mind. And his obsession with his
addle and suchlike has worsened
- Would you say, this is a coprophilic mind on the slipway to dementia?
What are the signs of his addle-headedness?
- He seems to have been blinded by the light of obviousness. Keeps
muttering something about “abstractions are an existential modality, but
they don’t exist” and insisting, “I have no mind, nurse, I have an
individuate, ideating, abstracting brain”.
- Blinded by the light of obviousness!? How can you tell?
- He keeps claiming that Plato was merely stating the obvious when he
pointed out that to “say” is to “say something”. He seems quite upset
about that. Calls him a “damned con-man and liar” and has written a
letter to the Minister for Education demanding that Ancient Greek no
longer be taught in any school in the land.
- Then perhaps it’s better, after all, to humour him. Keep him
straight-jacketed with his face to the wall so he can watch the soothing
shadows of the trees swaying before his window. He seems to enjoy
guessing which way they’ll sway next, and he tilts his head to and fro
with pleasure, singing “la la” all the while. And whatever you do, don’t
take away that little medal with “Brittannia empirica” on it he likes to
pin to his pyjama jacket.
