Hi out there,

I’m liking this list. I was wondering if anyone out
there knew much about Heidegger’s personal habits?
Things that Nietzsche would have loved to learn, for
instance, about his favorite thinkers.

Like what he tended to eat (both in the city and
blackforest), whether he was a drinker, what his
exercise regime was like, how his diet varied over
this life or over the seasons, whether he ever engaged
in asceticisms or fasting, what his beliefs about diet
and the constitution might have been. Did he eat white
bread or only dark rye, and other such quirky things?
What was his philosophy of nutrition?

Other than bread and wine in the fourfold, the only
other reference to food I found is when he thanks Boss
for a gift of Swiss chocolate, calling it a most
“stimulating gift.” So Heidegger liked chocolate.
Did he eat lots of it?

And then the larger question of personal habits, which
I haven’t found much.

His students on long walks in the Black Forest must
have had occasion to ask him how he ate and what his
habits where and how they were conducive or not to
thinking, or some such question.

Maybe he was strategic about eating based on what he
wanted to think about and how, wouldn’t that be a
find.

I can’t make out from his texts whether he is well and
consistently fed, or on what. Maybe on pure thinking.

Does anyone have any info or sources on this?

Thanks, Mathias
