it relates to the notorious ‘Venlo’ affair where two british secret agents
were kidnapped bt the SD. The Gestapo was tasked with producing a connection
between the British agents captured and an attempt on hitlers life in the
Burgerbrau beer hall on the 8th of Nov;
Towards the end of the meal Hitler suddenly asked Schellenberg, ‘What was
your general impression during the coversation you had with these Englishmen
in Holland- I mean before their kidnapping and questioning?
‘My impresion,’ said Schellenberg with all the conviction of his thirty
years, ‘was that that Great Britain will fight this war with all the fury
and tenacity of which she has given proof in all wars in which she was
thoroughly engaged. Even if we succeeded in occupying England the Government
and the leaders would conduct the war from Canada. It will be a life and
death struggle between countries of the same stock- and Stalin will look on
with interest and amusement.’
At this, Himmler, who was sitting between Hitler and Schellenberg, gave the
latter such a kick on the shin that it stopped his breath. Across the table
he shot him a withering look. But Schelleberg was launched and went on, ‘I
don’t know, my Fuhrer, if it was really necessary to change your policy
towards Great Britain after the Godesberg agreement in September 1938′.
All the guests exchanged terrified looks. Heydrich paled to the roots of his
hair while Himmler lowered his eyes, very embarrased, playing nervously with
his bread. Hitler regarded Schellenberg attentively for a few moments and
waited a long time without speaking. It seemed interminable. Finally he
said, ‘I hope that you realize that it is necessary to consider Germany’s
position as a whole. At the beginning I wanted to collaborate with Great
Britain. But she rejected all my advances. It is true there is nothing worse
than a family quarrel and, from a racial point of view, the English are in a
way our relatives. So far you may be right. It is extremelably regrettable
that we are engaged in this struggle to the death whilst our real enemies,
to the east, wait tranquilly for Europe to be destroyed. It is for that
reason that I don’t want to destroy England and will never destroy her. But
they must be brought to understand, and Churchill first of all, that Germany
has also the right to live. And I shall fight England till she gets off her
pedestal. The day will come when she will show herself disposed to envisage
an accord between us. This is my real aim. Do you understand?’
‘Yes, my Fuhrer,’ replied Schellenberg, ‘I follow your thought. But a war
like this is comparable to an avalanche. and who would venture to plot the
course of an avalanche?’
‘My dear boy,’ returned Hitler, ‘those are my worries, leave them to me.’
rest assured i’m not some bonehead, I just like history, and…’no comment’-
