Maybe nicely but not thought (through or thoroughly), not the “whole
thing”). What Descartes is doing with this infamous speech is not some
drawing of a conclusion (I am) from a premise (I think) but rather asserting
that what an I is (for philosophy from now on) is to be regarded entirely as
a thinking being; that this thinking being, this certain I (certain of its
self) shall be the fundamental grounding of all other (non-thinking,
thought) beings: the emergence (and still running emergency) of the realm of
sub-ject(ivity)/ob-ject(ivity) as the new beginning (arche) of philosophical
enterprise. Such a revolutionary sway and rise (of the human subject) gives
rise to a number of turnings and inevitably a number of falls… As such, it
needs be thought more carefully (than I can muster, that’s for certain :-) ).
