Schizo-Epistemology: Symptoms as Evidence for Heideggerian Philosophy
the Professor persists in claiming that his interpretation of the
symptoms of schizophrenia supports his argument that the Heidegger found
the one true philosophy. so, I thought we might pause for a capsule
summary of current thinking as to the causes of schizophrenia.
the presence of schizophrenia in cultures around the world suggests that
it is not related to cultural differences. the presence of schizophrenia
in ages past suggest that it is not related to environmental
contaminants which did not exist centuries ago.
that leaves biological factors as the leading class of suspected causes.
recently, the theory that schizophrenia is caused by an infectious agent
got a boost when it was shown that a drugs which are used to treat
schizophrenia will also inhibit the replication of toxoplasma gondii in
rats.
toxoplasma gondii is an infectious parasite whose life cycle requires
infecting felines and being excreted back into the environment where the
parasite can then infect many other creatures — including humans. the
parasite selectively infects muscle and brain tissue.
this research may eventually produce drugs capable of reversing a
toxoplasma gondii brain infection; or, perhaps, a vaccine that will
prevent schizophrenia.
this would be very welcome news for victims; their families; and society
in general; but, it could be bad news for philosophy professors who
would lose their “evidence” that the Heidegger found the one true
philosophy.
