For Aristotle the ontological elements of the object are the ‘form’ and the ‘matter’ Four ’causes’ were the basic elements of Aristotle’s ontology, the formal cause and the material cause. The material cause of a statue is the clay that was used by the sculptor, while the formal cause is the form given to the material by the sculptor. In addition to that there were two more causes – The efficient cause, which was the sculptor himself, and the statue intended by the sculptor is the final cause. The matter [clay in this example] is the potential or power (dýnamis) of the thing to be actualised. The form is actually the substance, the intelligible actuality (enérgeia) of the object. Pure matter would be ‘prime matter,’ ‘but since matter is potential, pure potential would have no actuality at all. Therefore, prime matter has no actual existence. On the other hand, pure form would be pure actuality, Aristotle did think there was such a thing, namely God. But as pure form and pure actuality God does suffer from the disability that he cannot do anything that he is not already doing. He is literally without power, which was a serious embarrassment when Christians, Moslems, and Jews later wanted to adapt Aristotle’s God to their religions. Aquinas did a good job on wangling him on board, but The Almighty is not very adaptable to anything that would be Omnipotens, i. e. ‘All Powerful,’ which is why in Islamic theology, especially, the Aristotelian connection was rejected. Jud: So there it is friends - Aquinas did a good job on smuggling him on board the good ship lollipop, but The Almighty is not very adaptable to anything that would be Omnipotens - like climbing the rigging or swilling down the heads or giving at his customary KILL!
