Among European philosophers, Heidegger’s contemptuous idiocy would remain
unrivaled until Jean Baudrillard’s quip about the World Trade Center’s former
workers that “the horror for the 4,000 victims of dying in those towers was
inseparable from the horrors of living in them — the horror of living and working
in sarcophagi of concrete and steel.”
That, Jud, expresses much of the sentiment of the new “Democratic” left in
the USA, now opting to reinstate a vast Federal bureacracy in the coming
Presidential elections (Nov. 2008). But this would merely be a case of
overcompensated doubt insofar as the twin towers were citadels of international bureacratic
totalism: private, corporate and governmental. Back in 1970 I lived a few
blocks north of the WTC building site and down in the SoHo (South of Houston
Street). I watched it go up andI was astounded, day by day, as I realized it was
not being built with heavy steel
i-beam girders but lightweight steel trusses. “The wind is going to blow it
down” I said to my young Harvard (Ratclif) lady companion who, as a country
girl suffered from both acrophobia and agoraphobia working in the Big Apple and
lving with me, a native New Yorker. My remark terrified her and so it was
decided that we get the hell out of NYC and move upstate to the Catskills. What I
didn’t fathom at the time was that the towers were designed qua planed
obsolesence and when the time came would neatly collapse like an accordine with very
little mess, expense and labor. Engineer Bin Ladin figured this out and saw an
opportunity to do in the real Muslim enemy, the bureacratic super-structure of
Western Society and the USSR. The idea was to re-establish the historical
Muslim tradition of internecine tribal warfare in the true jihadist sectarian
sense for claim to the proper expression of Allah. That way of life was being
encroached upon by Western bureacratism, both corporate and govedrnmental since
the Ottoman Empire came to an end after the first World War when fossil fuel
oil became premium. In any case the twin towers had to come down either by
Muslim intervention or as the wish fullfillment of Baudrillard insorfar is it was
retained as the global symbol of the spreading disease of the growing self
autonomy of bureacratic totalism and its control of the tecnological means to a
final end. This was also the rule of the University systems of “higher”
learning. What is also significant is that if those suicide planes had hit the
Empire State building of the Chrysler Building they would have been severely
damaged but not fall down because built of heavy i-beam girders arranged in
box-like grids. The Empire State building was not overcome by King Kong the cinema
symbol of the time of a recapitulated priaptic archaism, the gigantic
prehistoric ape, Darwinian forebear to petite humans. Komg was simply too big for
congress with his human lady love and the phallic empire state was too big for him.
Quite the opposite wa true forty years later with the maternal twin sisters of
the WTC so that Bin Ladin was in fact the revenge of Kong and which is
irreversible with all the heroics of G.W.Bush and all the King’s men.In any case, I
believe Baudrillard suffers as the man in the iron mask and like yourself, in
the hell of failing bureacratism.
Sincerely;
Bernard .
